Pergolas in the Bay Area

Custom pergolas built with your deck or added to an existing one, for shade, structure and evening light.

Pergola seating area on a composite deck in Saratoga, CA

A pergola turns an open deck into an outdoor room. It defines the dining or lounge area, filters the afternoon sun and gives you a place to hang lights, fans and heaters. We design each pergola to match the deck and the house, attached to the home or freestanding, and build it as part of the deck project or on a deck you already have.

Pergola FAQ

Often, yes. We check the framing and footings first. If the deck can carry the posts, we anchor the pergola to the structure; if not, we add footings or recommend building it with a new deck.

It depends on the city, the height and whether the pergola is attached to the house. When we build it with the deck it is usually covered by the same permit. We confirm the rules for your property before we start.

A pergola is normally priced as part of the deck project. Recent Techwood Decks projects that included a pergola ranged from about $55,000 to $120,000 in total, including the deck. See our deck cost guide for the details of each project.

Most of our pergolas are redwood or cedar, stained to match the deck. Both handle the Bay Area climate well and age gracefully with a periodic re-stain.

Yes. We run the wiring before the deck boards go down, so LED lights, string lights, fans and heaters can be built in from day one.
