Do I need a permit to build a deck in Los Altos?

Los Altos’ Building Division sets the permit rules for decks in the City, and the exemptions can differ from the state minimum. We confirm what applies to your property before we design.

Setbacks and zoning

  • Typical R1-10 setbacks: front 25 ft, first-floor interior side 10 ft, street side 20 ft, rear 25 ft (Sec. 14.06.080).
  • An uncovered deck may extend up to 6 ft into the required rear yard, but must stay behind the side yard setback of the lot. A deck no more than 6 inches above grade may go up to any property line (Sec. 14.66.210).
  • Los Altos has one of the lowest height thresholds in the area. We confirm your zoning and lot coverage before design.
