This year, our award-winning illuminated deck project proves that thoughtful lighting doesn’t just brighten a space. In fact, it transforms it.

A Backyard That Needed More Than Just a Deck
When the homeowner first reached out to Techwood Decks, their backyard had space and structure but it lacked warmth, flow, and functionality. While the pavers were already in place, the area felt disconnected and underutilized. Especially after sunset, this issue was noticeable.
Rather than simply adding a deck, our design team saw a bigger opportunity. We envisioned a space that would connect the home to the landscape and allow effortless movement between levels. Most importantly, it would create a setting that feels just as beautiful at night as it does during the day.
That vision became the foundation for a multi-level deck system designed not only to enhance usability. It also aimed to elevate the entire backyard experience.
Why Lighting Became the Heart of the Design
Lighting was never an afterthought it was the soul of this project.
Instead of relying on standard fixtures, we carefully layered multiple lighting elements to create depth, ambiance, and visual rhythm throughout the yard.
To begin with, LED step lights were installed on every level of the deck. These soft, warm glows gently guide movement while also highlighting the architectural lines of the structure. As a result, each step becomes both safer and more visually appealing.
At the same time, accent lighting was placed throughout the landscaping. Subtle colored lights illuminate the plants and greenery, adding dimension and contrast without overwhelming the natural environment. This approach creates a rich nighttime palette that feels sophisticated rather than artificial.
Turning a Tree Into a Nighttime Focal Point
One of the most striking elements of the design is the existing tree, which we transformed into a glowing centerpiece.
Using carefully positioned uplighting, the tree’s branches and leaves come alive after dark, casting elegant shadows across the deck and surrounding walls. Not only does this bring vertical interest to the space, but it also creates a dramatic focal point. As a result, it draws the eye upward, making the entire backyard feel larger, more open, and more dynamic.
In effect, the tree becomes a living sculpture illuminated by light.
A Floating Deck Effect With Recessed Lighting
To enhance the architectural feel of the deck itself, we integrated round recessed lights directly into the decking boards. These fixtures emit a soft, low-profile glow that makes the deck appear to float above the ground.
Because these lights are flush with the surface, they add elegance without visual clutter. At the same time, they reinforce the clean, modern look of the deck. This is especially noticeable when paired with the surrounding step and landscape lighting.
Together, these elements give the deck a cinematic presence after dark.
A Fully Lit Outdoor Kitchen for Day-to-Night Living
Of course, a backyard is only as functional as it is beautiful.
That’s why the custom outdoor kitchen was designed with both usability and atmosphere in mind. Fully illuminated for nighttime entertaining, the kitchen remains practical for cooking, hosting, and gathering. This holds true even long after the sun goes down.
Whether the homeowners are enjoying a quiet dinner or hosting friends, the lighting ensures that the space always feels welcoming, safe, and visually stunning.
A Space That Works Around the Clock
During the day, the homeowners enjoy a bright, open outdoor living space perfect for relaxing, dining, and spending time outdoors. However, when night falls, the transformation is extraordinary.
Soft light wraps around the deck. The tree glows. The steps shimmer. The entire backyard shifts into a warm, intimate, resort-style environment ideal for entertaining or simply unwinding after a long day.
That seamless transition from day to night is exactly what made this project stand out to the judges at the Nacional+ Deck Competition.
